Dives from Key West
Sand Key
This dive site is six miles off Key West and easy to find if you're going out in your own boat because there's a red metal lighthouse on the Key, 110 feet tall. On a calm day, it's possible to reach Sand Key for diving, in your own tiny boat, and it's a good spot to keep in mind if the weather is't great because it's relatively shallow. The depth range is good, however, ranging all the way down to 65 feet, so almost any level diver will find Sand Key diving to be exciting and worth the trip. Good snorkeling, too, since you can easily see elkhorn coral and items from the original lighthouse, which got destroyed in the mid-1800's. Shallow depths mean colorful coral, and spring and summer time are especially good times to visit Sand Key for diving or snorkeling.
