Fort Jefferson National Monument
Outside Key Largo and Looe Key, you have the western area of the Keys, mainly the Key West area. For Jefferson National Monument protects the reefs in and around the Dry Tortugas, off the tip of Key West. It also protects the islands and the historic fort found there, of course called Fort Jefferson. This area is accessible only by boat or seaplane, and there are regular trips out there from Key West. The scub diving and snorkeling are wonderful at Fort Jefferson National Monument, but people also take the trip out there to check out the fort, which was built before the Civil War. It was first a fort, then a prison. Most of the party trips from Key West advertize themselves as snorkel tours, so if you want to scuba you might have to charter a private boat or of course if you have your own boat go for it!
